Tuesday, September 11,
2001,8:55 PM: As the shock of today’s
unspeakable events settles into reality, it seems appropriate and necessary
to comment on the spiritual and emotional roller-coaster that we as American’s
will be riding in the weeks, months and, perhaps, years to come.
As I reflect on the day’s
events, I realize that the purpose of my Artistic Journeys project is not
one of mere imagery of those who inhabit the globe. Instead, it is a format
for education about the diversity of humanity and a plea for tolerance. As
witnessed on this fateful day, our world has become smaller and more
dangerous; and the need for comprehension and forbearance in the face of
enormous differences is absolutely critical. The memory of September 11 will
be with us throughout our lifetimes and beyond, and the events of this
horrific day only reaffirm the need for wisdom and spiritual resolve. A
deafening call has gone out for all of us to uncover our eyes and open our
ears and to unite and create a new and transforming vision.
I am hoping that my artistic
efforts will inspire viewers to not only look outwardly at these images but
also to peer inwardly at their spirits and to open their hearts and minds to
those who seem so unfamiliar. In so doing, perhaps each of us will become
more aware of our common heritage and will see the dignity in every face
that I have represented. I hope, too, that it will spark an ongoing interest
in the diverse cultures that these paintings depict.
As September 11 comes,
mercifully, to a close, I wonder what tomorrow will bring, and the tomorrow
after that. Even today, although it seems so distant and impossible, I dream
of a future of unity and peace. Each person I have portrayed is speaking to
those who are willing to listen, and it is the responsibility of those who
view my paintings to hear and to respond in a manner that will nurture and
promote the values of righteousness, fellowship and dedication to the unity
of humankind.
I pray for wisdom, for
guidance and for the courage to love those who are different from me; and I
fervently hope that others will do the same. We must remember that we are
all one community under God.
